Throwback Thursday! Cate Blanchett as Katherine Hepburn

Happy Throwback Thursday my vintage glamour guys and dolls! Today we are looking at the ever elegant Cate Blanchett in her role as Katherine Hepburn in the 2004 film The Aviator.

Kate and Howard play golf. She complains that people call her "outdoorsy" when she prefers the term "athletic".

The Aviator is a biographical drama about the life of American tycoon and innovator Howard Hughes. This sometimes problematic genius is shown from early adult hood into his later life, wining and dining starlets like Ava Gardner to Jean Harlow to Katherine Hepburn.

This soft almost creme colored suit gets alot of screen time.
Hepburn, played by Blanchett, dates Howard seriously until his OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) tendencies worsen to the point of breaking them up. Even after their split he still tried to keep her name out of the paper when she starts an affair with Spencer Tracy.

See what I mean about draping over the scene? Cate is all arms and legs in this.
Kate and the whole Hepburn clan; loving her sport coat here.
Cate just drapes herself over the scenery in this film, you get the sense of luxuriousness in her style.
Another great comparison photo.
A great side by side of  Katherine and Cate.
If you haven't seen this film, please do so. It is full of highly detailed sets, characters, and costumes. You can more about the film here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aviator_(2004_film)

RIP- Stephen Hawking

The great physicist and mathematician Stephen Hawking passed away late last night. I wonder if it is appropriate to mention that today is widely celebrated as "Pi" day, March 14th being represented by 3.14. To me it is some sort of cosmic irony that one of science's greatest minds makes their celestial journey on or close to a day where the world celebrates the mathematical sign Pi.

His contributions to science and our understanding of the universe are almost immeasurable, but what is measurable is his impact on those around him. He is survived by three children and three grandchildren. Rest in Peace, Sir.
Hawking and his first wife Jane on their wedding day.

A rare and candid family photo.

Oddly enough Hawking didn't learn to read properly until age 8. This is, I believe, a school snap shot.

'It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love.'- Stephen Hawking.

Happy International Women's Day- Spotlight Hedy Lamarr

Film star Hedy Lamarr is my spotlight choice for this International Women's Day! Known widely for her brilliant acting career what is less known about this complex and smart woman is her role as an inventor. Born in Vienna Hedy was accepted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014 for her work on secret communication devices. She also designed improvements to modern traffic lights and to Coka-a-Cola systems. Her contributions went unnoticed until 1997 when patents with her and her partners name were discovered. Thank you Hedy for showing all women that you can be both beautiful and smart!

Movie Review Monday: Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can is a Spielberg film that is a surprisingly light hearted comedy/adventure about 17 year old Frank Abagnale Jr. who not only impersonates teachers, airline pilots, doctors, and lawyers but cons more than 4 million dollars in process. Leonardo DiCaprio turns out a clever and witty performance as Frank Jr. His opposition is the sometimes dour FBI agent, Carl Hanratty, played by Tom Hanks. This whole film takes place in the golden age of flight in American, the friendly skies of Pan American Airways, the 1960's. The fashion is mostly preppy, middle to upper class and chock full of 60s goodness.

To get through an airway crowded with FBI agents, Frank ends up at a ladies school/college and picks up a bevy of new flight attendants to be his distractions. These suits are the iconic Pan Am blue, and were made to look exactly like the uniforms of the period. Spot on!

Frank poses as a student doing a report on Pan Am to learn all he can before posing as a pilot. This is the high Main Line prep look for the 1960s.
Agent Hanratty, looking very FBI in his thin tie, goes to visit Frank's mother (who is now remarried). She is rocking a bit older hairstyle here, but very fitting for a woman of her age and status.
Frank's constant need to impress his father Frank Sr. drives him to create more and more elaborate personas.
Check out these great Tortoise shell sun glasses.
Jennifer Garner makes a cameo as a 60's call girl. This is a behind the scenes shot. Her hair is on point for the mid to late 60s.
My favorite outfit by far in this film is Frank's white and orange mod sweater.

I mean look at this thing!
Posing as Dr. Conners, Frank falls for one of the young night nurses, Brenda (played by Amy Adams).

If you haven't caught this film yet you need to (it's score on Rotten Tomatoes is 96%)! It is a fun, fast, and touching film about a young man's struggle to have all the things in life he feels like he should. Based in part on a true story the real Frank Abagnale Jr. actually loved the film and how it portrayed him. You can read more about the film and the real Frank here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_Me_If_You_Can
