Doll Divine: having a little fun

Hi there everyone! Just a little fun for today: playing with a doll maker. If you aren't familiar with dolldivine.com you should be! It is a fun little creative way to spend a few mins building your own dolls and characters. One of my favorites is the X-girl (which helps you make your own Xmen character) but I just discovered their Deluxe Pin Up maker! I have been fiddling around with this and I love it! Movie Review Monday: Stepford Wives (2004)

Hi there all! I know it has been a hot min. since I did a movie review but I finally have caught up enough that I can get this one under way. First off let me say that the 2004 version of Stepford Wives gives me life like no other movie can. It is a highly satirical and comedic take on the original horror/suspense film, which suits me just fine. I have seen the original and I like it but the pacing can be slow for my taste. Some of you are no doubt wondering why I am reviewing Stepford Wives, since it isn't an old film, nor is it set in a vintage era. It does, however, offer some great style based in pin up and reproduction clothing. Now lets get into it...and as always Spoiler Alert!

The matron of the town of Stepford is Claire. Pin curled hair, vintage set bodice with flower accents....

Faith Hill gets some fabulous outfits as one the of wives.

Every wife is always dressed: hats, gloves, jewelry....this is at a book club meeting.

Our main characters the Eberharts, Joanna who was a high powered successful TV executive and her husband Walter who worked for her.

Joanna makes a few friends when she firsts arrives in Stepford. Bobbi is an angry, sloppy, fantastically good writer. She and her husband end up in Stepford to try and save their marriage.

After Joanna was attacked at an awards show she is fired from her dream job and suffered a bit of break down. She is given electro-shock therapy and Walter decides she needs a new life.

...but after a fight with her husband she tries to live the Stepford Life.

The Stepford Wives is in my opinion a great satire of the classic "American dream", but it just shows that the only perfect people aren't people at all. They are robots! Some people find the metaphor here a bit heavy handed but to me that is part of the fun. It isn't subtle, but it is played for laughs.

Mad Men Countdown: The Best Holiday Looks!

I thought since we are approaching the holidays and it was time to do another Mad Men Countdown I decided to do a "Top Holiday Looks" list. So sit back, sip your favorite season beverage, and enjoy the pretty!

So onto the countdown:

#1: Egyptian Inspired Evening:

Stirling Cooper Draper Pryce holds a Christmas party for their best and jerkiest client. Jane Siegel Sterling looks fabulous in this white sheath dress with chunky neck piece. 

 #2: Peggy's Easter Ensemble

I posted this one before in a Peggy Olsen countdown but damn if this doesn't capture that good girl Easter outfit perfectly.

 #3: Joan's Present Dress:

Another favorite from the office party. Rodger asks Joan to wear this sexy red dress with the bow in the back because it makes her "look like a present". 

 #4: Trudy's Memorial Marigold:

The newly wedded Campbell's host a Memorial Day party. This darling yellow and creme colored dress is perfect for the occasion. 

#5: Shirley's Fashion Forward Mini

Shirley is quite possibly the most fashion forward person on Mad Men. Her style is straight up 1970's goodness, and she serves it to you with a no nonsense attitude and a fabulous fro.

I love how Dawn is there to serve as contrast for Shirley. They are the new Peggy and Joan! 

Happy Platinum Anniversary to The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh!!!

We here at the bombshell beauty blog are happy to wish the royal couple Happy Anniversary! For those of you who don't know a platinum anniversary is the celebration of 70 years! That is a long time to be with someone!

The princess and her suitor were married on November 20th, 1947, a somewhat lavish affair right after the second world war. Famously the princess Elizabeth had to save up her ration coupons to purchase her wedding dress! Also worthy of note this was the first time a royal couple of Great Britain were married over live broadcast television, setting a precedent for future weddings to be televised.

The Princesses wedding dress was designed by Sir Norman Hartnell. Below you can see his winning design:

Style Inspiration: Janis Joplin

Born in the conservative Texas town of Port Arthur, Janis Joplin's talent landed her in the halls of the rock and roll greats of the 1960s.

Check out the dress leggings combo. Patterned tights and leggings really became a fashion trend in the late 60's.

This is one of the only picture I can find of her where she is this "bare".

Look at this picture. Look at the people in the background. She is a riot of color in this drab setting....

A vastly complex woman who reeled between music styles and clothing style Janis was a whirlwind of color. A true tour de force she carved out her own niche in the rock industry with her heart felt blues style vocals....Janis became a member of the famous 27 club when she overdosed and unfortunately died from heroin usage.

I look to Janis whenever I feel like an outfit that I have put together is too "loud" or "odd" or "off the wall". I think to myself that maybe I have gone over board when Janis' gravely voice pops into my head telling me "hey fuck em girl if they can't love you". Janis had a flare for the colorful and dramatic, she embodied the late 60's counter culture style while keeping something that was purely her. Here's to you Janis....you and Bobby McGee.

Mad Men Countdown: Peggy Olson

This secretary turned copy writer was often the butt of jokes about style and fashion but once Peggy came into her own she had a solid, self assured style that I would kill for! Let's get onto the countdown:

First Day Downer:

Poor sweet Peggy Olson on her first day at work. I almost forgot how young she looked in the first season and since her transformation was so gradual it catches me off guard. Study little sweater with what looks like a wool skirt.

 Fling in Green:

Though this outfit leaves alot to be desired, it is still kinda cute in its own way. The seafoam skirt is adorable but not great for office quickies....those yellow pumps with this? just no

 Never Left Out:

Once becoming a copy writer Peggy becomes determined not to be left out of "out of office meetings". She over hears that the boys plan on taking Playtex executives out to a burly club and she plans on showing them what for! This is gorgeous, and either bought that day or borrowed. 

 Easter Pinks:

Perfect in pink for Easter, Peggy finds out that Father Gil, whom she had a bit of a flirtation with, knows about her unplanned pregnancy (see the seafoam comments). This is gorgeous to our eyes but is slightly old fashioned for the time period.

 Pink and Green Gown:

After leaving SC and ending up working her tail off at CGC Peggy shows up to an award banquet in this stunning green and pink evening gown. I love the bow accent and the embroidery.

 Yellow Bow:

This is office wear at its finest. She wears this yellow top quite a few times, with a jacket all you can see is the bow, but when the jacket comes off you can see all the criss cross detailing. Peggy tends to favor bows and details around the neck to mimic men's ties. 

 Pant Suit Of Doom:

For real though, I love this. Peggy is in the office on a weekend, in PANTS. This is probably one of the best and eye searing outfits she has ever worn. Clearly the 70's are on their way. I bet some of you have pictures of your mothers/grandmothers standing in a kitchen smoking a cigarette in something just like this. 

 The Hokusai Dress:

After having her office delayed several times Peggy worries about her place in the new agency. She feels forgotten and expresses this to Roger Sterling who tells her to get it together, that she has worked hard to get where she is and to go in there and show them who is boss. Which she does in this fabulous outfit. Joan once told her to "stop dressing like a little girl" and Peggy definitely had a Catholic school girl look for a long time. No more!

From frumpy secretary to serious executive to confident working woman Peggy Olson experienced, in my opinion, the most style growth over the entire run of the show. Her hard work and dedication to her goals saw her benefit the most at the end of the series.  What are some of your favorite looks for Peggy Olson?
