Adding some fun color to that vintage look!

Most people who are familiar with the Rockabilly style know that brightly colored hair is part of the territory. Pink, green, blues and reds are all par for the course when it comes to mixing rock and roll and retro hair styles. Now you purists out there might be saying "that is not for me"....and it is totally up to you but check out this awesome video from British Pathe:

Mad Men Countdown: Megan Draper (Calvet)

This week on Mad Men Countdown I am covering Megan Calvet nee Draper's fantastic wardrobe! Fun and a bit on the child like side Megan was a secretary in the SCDP offices who ended up on the arm of Don Draper. Quitting her job as a copywriter she then pursued her dream of being an actress. At times volatile and at the same time captivating Megan was, in my opinion, one of the best written characters on the show. Let's get to her outfits:

Number 1: Office Chic

One of the first times we see Megan is in a private focus group. Look at how polished and put together she looks.

Number 2: Pretty in Pink

Normally we don't see Megan in alot of patterns to begin with. She like Joan is a solid block of color, usually. I really do like this dress though.

 Number 3: Bikini Babe

In need of a sitter while in California, Don hires Megan to come with him and kids. Here is she in a bikini (which Don bitched Betty out about not a few seasons ago).

 Number 4: Just Checking Dress

Megan plans to meet up with an old friend while in California. She makes sure to "stop by" to make sure Don doesn't need anything.

 Number 5: Chains in Peach

Megan tends to dress in highly feminine/ very bright colors. Peach or pink is very popular for her.

 Number 6: Howard Johnson Dress:

Love this outfit. Now that she is married to Don she is definitely stepping up her clothing game.

 Number 7: California Dreaming

This shot is pure Hollywood Glamour. Meant to showcase her success in California, Megan is dressed to kill in this powder blue mini dress with sheer long sleeves. This is the cutting edge of fashion for the late 60's.

Number 8: Lame' Awards Dress

Ok, Whose grandma had a lame' dress like this one in their closet? The Eastern influences hit the 60s fashion scene hard, and here she is attending an awards banquet in this pink and gold gown. Also, note how much hair she has going on.

Number 9: Bisouix Dress

THIS DRESS....Megan performs a song and dance for Don at his surprise b-day party. Note that this silouhette is almost exactly like her powder blue dress from earlier. This is the height of cutting edge evening wear for the mid to late 60s.

Movie Review Monday: Stepford Wives (2004)

Hi there all! I know it has been a hot min. since I did a movie review but I finally have caught up enough that I can get this one under way. First off let me say that the 2004 version of Stepford Wives gives me life like no other movie can. It is a highly satirical and comedic take on the original horror/suspense film, which suits me just fine. I have seen the original and I like it but the pacing can be slow for my taste. Some of you are no doubt wondering why I am reviewing Stepford Wives, since it isn't an old film, nor is it set in a vintage era. It does, however, offer some great style based in pin up and reproduction clothing. Now lets get into it...and as always Spoiler Alert!

The matron of the town of Stepford is Claire. Pin curled hair, vintage set bodice with flower accents....

Faith Hill gets some fabulous outfits as one the of wives.

Every wife is always dressed: hats, gloves, jewelry....this is at a book club meeting.

Our main characters the Eberharts, Joanna who was a high powered successful TV executive and her husband Walter who worked for her.

Joanna makes a few friends when she firsts arrives in Stepford. Bobbi is an angry, sloppy, fantastically good writer. She and her husband end up in Stepford to try and save their marriage. 

This is Bobbi's transformation after her "Stepford" makeover.

After Joanna was attacked at an awards show she is fired from her dream job and suffered a bit of break down. She is given electro-shock therapy and Walter decides she needs a new life.

At first Joanna resists any change to her lifestyle and attitude...

...but after a fight with her husband she tries to live the Stepford Life.

The Stepford Wives is in my opinion a great satire of the classic "American dream", but it just shows that the only perfect people aren't people at all. They are robots! Some people find the metaphor here a bit heavy handed but to me that is part of the fun. It isn't subtle, but it is played for laughs.
