Interview with Phoebe Nyx: The Chartreuse Chanteuse

Hi there all! So here is the long awaited interview with local Burlesque performer Phoebe Nyx! This tall glass of water is fun, quirky, and an all around doll! Let's get into it:

How did you get started in burlesque?
I started attending burlesque shows to support my performing friends, and I fell in love with the art form.  I spent a year as a regular, dressing for the themes, sitting in the front row, and getting to know the troupe.  It wasn't long before I wanted to be part of the show, and started brainstorming a name and an idea.  When it was time to audition, I brought my soprano ukulele, Elphaba, who I'd only been playing for two months, and a parody I'd written as a show opener.  I was terrified, but I was pushing myself out of my comfort zone and facing my stage fright head-on. I was hired on the spot as a variety act and a stage kitten. That was in 2015, and I'm so glad for that moment of bravery and a troupe that took a chance on me.

Have you always been a performer?
Yes, it's an important outlet of expression for me.  I've done everything from improv to music to character performance to emceeing...but, oddly enough, no formal theater.

Are you a self taught musician?
Ha! Depends on the instrument!  While I sang in chorus and choir when I was small, I'm a classically-trained cellist, and have been playing instrumentally since I was 11.  I came up through a system that taught music reading and playing by ear simultaneously.  Once I was comfortable on the cello, I began picking up piano and guitar on my own.  After that was Irish whistle, lyre, a return to voice, and baritone ukulele.

What is the best part about being on stage?
It's the rush that makes you feel like you’re flying.  Let me sing on a stage, a capella or with my uke, and I feel like I could soar.  When I walk through the curtain, I leave my fears, my insecurities, my worries, backstage, and I hope to help the audience feel the same way...it's my job and my honor to help them escape, at least for a little while.

Who is your vintage style icon?
I adore Lucille Ball, Maureen O’Hara, and Rita Hayworth.  Each of them had a beautiful natural look, using bright colors and fit-and-flare dresses to draw the eye and fresh makeup to keep it. Large waves in the hair, or an iconic poodle, arched brows, a red lip, and soft rose cheeks...these red-haired sirens were talented, elegant, and spirited. My copper red is because I fell in love with Maureen in The Quiet Man, my everyday look is positively Lucy, and my evening glamour  and burlesque stage look is decidedly Rita.

What era do you find really suits you or that you love to emulate?
I’m a 40s and 50s gal, and I'm rarely without a New Look Dior silhouette or touches.  There’s something to be said for the style and music of the era, and for the overall aesthetic.  It's iconic!

What are some of your favorite tips and tricks for vintage styling?

There are so many!  I'll try to keep it short and sweet.

Don't be afraid to hunt.  I love the hunt for true vintage.  Know your measurements, and bring a measuring tape with you if you're going to be browsing the clothing racks in-store.  Thrift stores and antique malls are treasure troves of history.  My local antique mall (Sleepy Poet in Charlotte, NC! I swear I know the entire assortment of the 40s-50s racks at one of their vendors, Kitsch-y Cool Vintage) staff is fantastic, and they've dubbed me “The Green Lady.”  They always know what I'm after.  Get to know the staff, browse and shop small and local any time you can, and don't be afraid to hunt eBay or Etsy to widen your search!

Start Small.
Hats, gloves, purses, and jewelry are a great and cost-effective way to get started!  I began with my mother handing down a simple pair of my great-grandmother’s late 50s Lisner leaf earrings.

Find Your Look
For my face, I wear minimal powder and blush and play up my eyes with thick winged liner and filling in my brows.  It's unusual that I don't have a bright lip...I think, at last count, I have a dozen different shades of red!  My hair is naturally big, frizzy, and wavy, so I use the volume to my advantage.  I'll never have sleek waves and curls...my hair just won't do it, so big, natural-looking Rita waves it is!

Every person has a different Look, from vibrant hair color to signature beauty marks to retro tattoos...the sky’s the limit!  What draws your eye and makes you happy?  Find it and embrace it!

What do you think really defines your style, on stage and off?
I am a fit-and-flare kind of girl.  A well-fit top and a fluffy, voluminous skirt make me happy, whether it's daywear or evening gowns, and nearly always in my signature shades of green.  It's sweet, playful, feminine, flirty, and a little sassy, heavily inspired by Gil Elvgren’s gorgeous pinup art.

Why do you think vintage styling has gained popularity?
I think there's a sense of nostalgia that vintage styling taps into, and there's something lovely about a vintage silhouette on a modern woman.  It's distinct, it's memorable, and it's confident.  You can't slouch in these shapes, so you keep your shoulders back, your head held high, and you become a more commanding presence.  It works for every body shape, every height, every build, every aesthetic.  Vintage, retro, and rockabilly culture welcomes -everyone-, which is a distinct and positive change from the culture, society, and era from which the clothing style comes.

DragonCon Burlesque Show 2016
What has been your best vintage find?
Just one?  That's so hard!  I find treasures all the time, and it's hard to pick a favorite!

Some of the pieces I've been fortunate enough to find in my searching are deadstock stockings, a black circle skirt hand-painted with gold Greek columns, and an olive circle skirt with hand-appliquéd oak leaves and acorns, all vintage 50s. I’ve also found a lovely lime peignoir set that was one of my earliest acquisitions, and it’s a cherished treasure.
Hey look! I know that blonde, it's me!

Is there one item that you would love to own that you haven’t found yet?
I've coveted a Lilli Ann princess coat with fur collar...in green, of course!  Difficulty is always the price and my size.  One day.  That's my unicorn.

How did you pick your signature color?
I love green so much, and my favorite shades are apple, lime, kelly, and emerald. I started wearing more and more green over the last several years, but that distinct lime green is absolutely inspired by my ukulele.  It's a color that makes me smile, and it has that effect on others.  It’s a love letter to the vibrancy of Technicolor, a color that is loud and immensely playful.  That's something I hope to cultivate in my style: a visual representation of who I am, without ever having to say a word.  Put that shade on a blue-eyed redhead, and you're bound to turn heads!

What advice would you give a budding pin up girl?
Look at the pin-ups of the era, both the art and the Hollywood inspirations, and find the things that speak to you.
Develop a persona.  Find a name that matches your stage presence and personality.  Think of it as creating a pin-up character: Is she sultry?  Bubbly?  Girl-next-door?  Vixen?  And as you're finding clothing to build a wardrobe for her, find pieces you can mix and match, find shapes and silhouettes that support your persona, and remember that thrift stores are your friend!

This community is so supportive!  Reach out, ask questions, find tutorials, and have fun!

Vicki Vegas' favorite Beauty Products!

Hi there all!

So this post I am going to recommend a few products that work really well  for me. This doesn't mean they will be best for you, or that I think any other products are inferior in any way. You do you~

Also, please note I have slightly dry skin, but generally with a good moisturizer I don't have any noticeable problems.

First things first: Primer/BB Cream.

I have fallen in love with Air Patrol by Benefit! It is a great tool to keep things in place and it also helps protect your skin from environmental hazards that might hurt or damage your skin. Please Please Please do not take that to mean you can skip your SPF.

Up next: Concealer.

Ok ya'll, confession time. I would rather use a concealer 9 times out of 10, instead of a foundation. So I apply my concealer under the eyes, around the sides of my nose, upper lip and chin. It all gets gently spread out and powdered after that. Seriously, that is the amount of foundation I normally wear....now if I'm going on stage or for photos there will be more product than that. I use Benefit's Fake Up hydrating concealer....its creamy smooth with great coverage.

I use their Light color.

Then it is: Blush

I love a creme blush, sometimes I use a stain or a powder but there is something great about a creme blush that makes me come back to it over and over again. You can use fingers to dab and spread it, a brush for a lighter effect, or if you are going really heavy you can use a sponge. Any way you spell it I think creme blushes give a wonderful, vintage style effect. I use Dream Blush Bouncy!
This is not a true color, i really love a deep pink for my skin tone.

After that: Eyeliner

Whew!  I can not tell you how long I have looked for a great waterproof eyeliner. I finally found what I was looking for in Stila's Stay All Day. Their eyeliner pen with a felt tip has the darkest formula I personally have found and it goes on very smoothly. For ladies doing vintage wing eyeliner looks please give this brand a try!

Lastly for this post: Brows

Brows are the latest "it" thing and I have always been a fan of a bit thicker brow....so here's hoping it sticks around for awhile. To get a good vintage brow I suggest watching some tutorials and getting yourself some Anastasia Browdip Pomade and a good angled brush!

Seriously, this stuff is great. Just make sure to keep the lid on it so it doesn't dry out on you!
Browdip comes in an array of colors, check with your makeup consultant at the store to find a color that suits you.

Well that is it for this makeup post today. A few final words I will leave you with:

Makeup has been used for THOUSANDS of years. Trends change, styles change....don't be afraid to try different things or new looks. Makeup is a tool, use it (or don't) it is up to you. That is what I think makes makeup so great.

Stay tuned my glamour gals and guys!

Vintage Scarf Tying and Tutorials

Hi there all...If there is one thing this vintage gal loves it is scarves! Head scarves are a fun and creative way to add some color and style to your vintage look. Below are a few pics of some of my favorite scarf looks and tutorials by some amazing people on how to wrap and wear your own scarves!

This is floral vintage cotton scarf that is one of my favorites. Pair that with some big hoop earrings and you've got a great look
This scarf is a light weight almost sheer material, probably some rayon blend.

This is a HUGE cotton scarf gifted to me for my birthday last year.

I love it because it has so many colors that it goes with everything!

So how can YOU do some fun retro looks with scarves....do what I did and watch these great tutorials:

Keeping that Bombshell Blonde!

So many people seem to ask me about my hair; what do I use on it...how do I keep it looking so nice...etc. So here are my Tips and Tricks to keeping your Bombshell Blonde at it's very best!

Dazzling blonde!

So, I have been been this blonde (almost white) for ten years, with a short year and a half break when I went back to my so called natural color. Honestly I feel my best, brightest, and most sassy as a blonde....it is like my soul mate of hair colors. I actually do my own bleaching (which is up to you) salons work just as well but I can't keep paying people (every four weeks) for something I know I could do at home. Now if you are starting with bleach on already colored hair I would HIGHLY recommend going to a salon or stylist. When I reverted to blonde from a dark brown this last time I went to a professional. Now that it is just the roots (which bleach much better because there is no other color put into the hair, just it's natural color) I can do those myself.

Yesterday in the office at work; you might recognize Miss Phoebe Nyx

I go to Sally's Beauty Supply and buy their Radical Bleaching Kit. It really works well and I have used it for years. What makes the saddest is when I see beautiful women with fried, orange, awful looking bleach jobs....and there are simple ways to avoid that:

1. Go to a stylist if you are not comfortable bleaching your own hair. Seriously if you are not comfortable or have no experience in coloring your own hair at home then there is NO SHAME in going to a professional.

2. Buy after treatments for your hair ( I use the Ion After Color Creme) This is a thicker than normal conditioner that will help restore moisture to your damaged hair.

3. Use a Purple Shampoo and Conditioner. Seriously! I use Shimmer Lights ( which is not an expensive brand) to "tone" my hair in shower. Purple is the opposite of yellow so the more you wash with a purple toned shampoo/conditioner the less yellow your hair will be. This is how I get my white hot blonde to be its best. A small warning, you can leave your conditioner on longer maybe a min. or two but if you leave it on longer than that you will start re-depositing color back into your hair (you will end up blue or purple).

Shimmer Lights Shampoo and Conditioner. Seriously this stuff is DARK Purple.
Color Wheel, just for reference.
Lastly I would like to say that no matter what hair color you have or want to have make sure to take care of your hair. I know doing a lot of vintage styles I can be really hard on my hair so I make sure to give it a break every now and then. All the hairspray and back combing and pinning can really take its toll.

So, my Bombshell Bloggers....what are your tips and tricks for maintaining your mane?

Vicki Vegas' Tips for Flawless Skin!

Hey there Glamour Guys and Gals,

Today I am going to be giving you my tips for great skin. As we start to get deeper and deeper into Spring and then Summer I thought I would share my favorite tips about keeping skin clear and healthy. Ready?

1. Drink LOTS of water. I know people hear this all the time and even I don't get my "8 a day" glasses but drinking water is the key to making sure your skin is hydrated, full, and clear. Seriously, if you are worried about the quality of your skin the easiest and cheapest way to help is by drinking enough water.

2. Wear sunscreen! Skin cancer looks good on no one. The sun can also cause age spots, discoloration, sun burn and peeling. Have you ever seen an older lady who has clearly tanned her whole life? What does her skin look like? Soft, I bet not. You should try to put on sunscreen even in cloudy weather. Many makeup brands are now adding SPF to their foundations, and it is a smart way to go. What does it hurt to put on a little sunscreen?

3. Get plenty of Sleep. I know in our modern, go getter kind of world that getting a full 8 hours for most people seems impossible. Without enough sleep you will end up with puffiness, redness, dark circles and tired skin. I personally believe in a good life balance....stay out late one night? Get more rest the next day.

4. Find a good moisturizer. No skin post would be complete without saying that your skin needs hydration and a little help in the form of a good moisturizer. Don't get just anything either. go to your makeup counter or the like, and ask questions. Do some research. I personally use Renewed Hope in a Jar Dry.

5. Last and certainly not least: Listen To Your Skin. Everyone is an individual and listening to your body is very important. If you seem to be having dryer skin or patches of redness or even more breakouts than usual....listen to what your face/skin is telling you. You might need to seek the help of a doctor or dermatologist. Either way make sure you are in tune with your body. I tend to stand in front of the mirror at least once a day and take a long calming breath. Then I open my eyes and honestly access my face. "What's going on today/" I ask myself...

If you are having a bad skin day or even a bad skin week/month/year just remember that your cells are regenerating and that time really will help all things.

There you go my friends. I hope you found this helpful!!!
